NetAdvantage Silverlight CTPのアップデート情報

インフラジスティックスのNetAdvantage for Silverlight CTP　はもうお試しいただけましたでしょうか？

Silverlight2 beta2に対応するコンポーネントとして、インフラジスティックスの定番BIコンポーネントであるチャートとゲージを先行公開しています。

下のスクリーンショットのように、メモリ・CPU使用率を表示するサンプル等も含まれていますので、自宅のサーバにアップロードして公開すればそのままサーバ監視ツールになるかもしれません

←1秒ごとにWCFサービスからCPU/Memory使用率を取得し、ライブデータとしてチャート・ゲージ上に表示します。

←同様に、２つのゲージでリアルタイム更新をしています。

こちらは実は、当初公開のものからひっそりとアップデートされていて、今はCTP_R2となっています。

以下のリストがR2での変更点となりますが、大きな修正も含まれますので、ぜひアップデートをお願いします。

XAMLファイルに２つ以上のコントロールを追加した際に例外が発生していた点を修正しました。
CTPのアセンブリ名が、 Infragistics.Silverlight.DataVisualization.Preview.v8.1.dll に変更されました。併せてサンプルの参照設定も変更されています。
サンプルにいくつかの小さな修正が施されました。

今後のアップデート情報についてもブログ上で報告しますので、たまにチェックしてください。

ところで最近、各コミュニティでもSilverlight2関連のイベントが多く開催されており、ベータ２登場とともにがぜん盛り上がってきた印象があります。

NetAdvantage for WPF July Hotfix - Update

We are in the final stages of the NetAdvantage for WPF hotfix.

We are planning to get it out there right under the wire. We expect to release the next NetAdvantage for WPF on by July 29th.

If you review the lists below and find that an issue you are experiencing has been fixed but has not been published as a public hot fix, you can submit a support request to Developer Support to ask that you be provided with the private hot fix; be sure to detail the development issue (BR) number when submitting the request. Information on ways you can submit a support request are provided in the "Product Support" section on the Get Help page of our website.

As Grigor mentions in this blog post, we expect to publicly release this hot fix by the end of July. Keep posted to the Hot Fix blogs for further developments.

NetAdvantage for WPF July Hotfix

We know it’s been a while since our last WPF hot fix so we can imagine that you’re all anxious for us to get the next hot fix to you. We’ve got some good news, we are close to finishing the next WPF hot fix. Our testing cycle is on schedule to allow us to release the hot fix in just a couple of weeks, by the end of July. I’ll update this blog again by the end of next week to give a more specific date.

少し前にインフラジスティックスの新しい Microsoft SharePoint 実装事例 Pomegranate についてお話ししましたが、その Pomegranate がこのたび正式に発表されました。

Pomegranateはザクロのことなんですが、子供のころ近所のおばさんが庭のザクロを子どもたちに食べさせてくれた思い出があります。果実の見かけはごっつくても、中を開けたら宝石みたいに光った種がたくさんでしたね。SharePoint を開けたらNetAdvantage がキラキラ、そんな感じのPomegranateなんでしょうか。

Using the ASP.NET AJAX Client Library without a ScriptManager

In the post just before this one, I talk a little bit about using the ASP.NET AJAX client library to help ease the pain of client-side development, but I don't actually mention or give any server-side examples or code snippets. Well, there's a good reason for that: the ASP.NET AJAX client-side library does not require the ScriptManager or any other server controls!

Actually, let me say it a bit differently: when you add a ScriptManager control to your page, it "enables" or makes ASP.NET AJAX available for use on that page, which effectively means that the client-side library is added as a script reference in the markup and is therefor subsequently downloaded and available for use on the client. However - since all it is is a JavaScript file - if you feel the need to use the ASP.NET AJAX Client Library on your page without adding a ScriptManager on the server side (like, oh, in an ASP.NET MVC view when you can't add a ScriptManager?), you can still feel free to add a reference to it yourself! Actually, it's pretty easy...

Finding it is the hard part.

Where is MicrosoftAjax.js?

I quite honestly don't know the best answer to this question, but here are two places to look:

ASP.NET 2.0 (Futures): If you've ever installed one of the older versions of the ASP.NET AJAX framework (via one of the Futures bundles) and used the default install directory, you should be able to get the raw file for the ASP.NET 2.0 version here:
- C:\Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions\v1.0.61025\MicrosoftAjaxLibrary\System.Web.Extensions\1.0.61025.0\MicrosoftAjax.js
ASP.NET 3.5: With the release of Visual Studio 2008 came .NET 3.5, in which the ASP.NET AJAX libraries were included. AFAIK, the client-side framework is no longer stored as raw files, but now served up as a Web/ScriptResource. If that really is the case, I think the best way is to create a throw-away WebForm, add the ScriptManager to it, use something like FireBug or Fiddler to determine the URL, and save a local copy. (Important: save the local copy! If you decide to instead use an existing production site with a ScriptManager on it, I don't think you can count on the URL to the ScriptResource remaining the same... at least I wouldn't!)

After using one of these methods to get the library, I generally save a local copy of it in my project (alongside the rest of my scripts) and add a reference to it just as you would any other external JavaScript file.

Now all that's left is to enjoy the ASP.NET AJAX client-side love!

The ASP.NET AJAX Client Library: Keeping the Server-Side Paradigm Alive on the Client

I've been talking a lot lately about using the ASP.NET AJAX client library (which I'm going to refer to as AACL in this post) without the server-side controls, mostly in the context of ASP.NET MVC. Now, I'm not necessarily recommending that you use it over any of the other fine JavaScript libraries out there (jQuery and MooTools come to mind), but for ASP.NET developers, it offers an interesting twist to client-side development. The ASP.NET team put a good deal of effort into helping keep the same paradigm across the server-client divide meaning that you end up having the same types of concepts at your disposal on the client-side as you're used to with server-side Web Forms development. For instance, here's an example of how you make a (manual) AJAX request on the client side:

   request.add_completed(some_function);
   request.invoke();

There are a few interesting things that I find interesting about this code snippet due to their similarity with general .NET and/or Web Forms development:

Fully-Qualified Namespaces: I'm referencing the piece in the first line - "Sys.Net.WebRequest". The AACL supports the concept of namespaces, just as you're used to when dealing with the .NET Framework. The benefits of being able to use namespaces should be obvious. Unfortunately, there is a downside to this as well - a class that may have been called simply "WebRequest" is now just about twice as long... and considering the fact that every byte down to the client matters (and you're almost certainly going to be referring many of these classes), this may end up representing a good deal of bloat in your application
Property behavior: the example above happens to only use setters (e.g. request.set_url([...])), but the AACL makes heavy use of the "Property" metaphor, preferring the use of foo.set_XX() and foo.get_XX() to access your fields and promote encapsulation.
Event Handlers: on line 4, you can see an example of adding a handler to the "completed" event of the request object. Of course, events and delegates are nothing new to JavaScript, but the AACL offers some nice functionality to help manage the adding and removing (registering/de-registering) of these delegates.

It is concepts such as those I mention above (and plenty more) that make the ASP.NET Ajax client library quite comfortable to use when doing client-side development - with or without Web Forms.

iPhoneとユーザーエクスペリエンス

一応、このブログはハイテク系ブログなので、本日発売された、あのiPhoneをトピックにすることが私の「義務」だと思っています。毎朝、インフラジスティックスのオフィスに出勤する際、表参道のSoftbankの前を通ります。発売日の３日前から、かなりの人が並んでいました。

今朝、発売開始直後の様子をビデオに撮ったので、Silverlightで再生できるようにしました。

iPhoneの魅了は何でしょうか？最大の魅力はやはり、UXが素晴らしいという点でしょう。iPhoneのUXを考える時、下記の２点のことがいえると思います。

１．機能よりExperienceが重要。Steve Jobsは別にメール機能を発明したわけじゃない。iPhoneの機能が素晴らしいというより、iPhoneの機能のUXが素晴らしいといった方がいい。iPhoneの開発はユーザが喜ぶExperienceを目指したのがいい。

２．インタフェースを「会話」だと考えている。最近はやっているソフトのほとんどは、会話のような「流れ」がある。必要なときにボタンがポップアップされる。使い終わると、ボタンが消える。iPhoneの画面上の固定ではないインターフェースは素晴らしい。ユーザとの会話のように。まさに”Cool！”。

ご存知のように、私たちインフラジスティックスでは、プレゼンテーション・レイヤのソフトに注力していますので、常に素晴らしいUXを作り出すべく尽力しています。

Development Community Volunteer Week

I didn't get to read my RSS feeds yet today but I got a hint to go read them and I discovered that Chuck wrote a nice blog post about volunteer work and me. I guess the cat's out of the bag now :) Thanks Chuck for the kudos - I really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to making a really good use of that time.

There are so many people in the development community that spend countless hours of their volunteer time. Especially in the VSTS community. People are working volunteering time:

developing and supporting open-source projects & tools,
speaking at events and conferences (this takes a considerable amount of time to prepare for,)
leading local user groups,
writing blog posts, technical articles, & books,
answering community questions in the MSDN Forums,
giving feedback, enhancement requests, & reporting problems of Microsoft products to improve them, and
all of the other ways people volunteer time that I can't even begin to think of.

I personally know several people (and more) who really focus on trying to make the entire development community better off with these time & knowledge contributions. (Infragistics as a company has been really supportive in all of our efforts to help the community.) I hope you get as much out of it as I do from learning from everyone. Microsoft has done a great job in recognizing those individuals by creating the Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award. I'm honored to have been awarded this award earlier this year.

I've really not been able to blog as much as I have liked to or participating in the MSDN Forums answering people's questions. I have focused the volunteer time that I have had in other areas. I had a really great time at the MVP Summit earlier this year and came back with so many different ideas. I really love the VSTS MVP & Champs group - truly a great group of professionals! This brings me to my idea for this year.

I feel like I haven't had time this year to really provide anything meaningful to the community. So, I want to dedicate a work week and do something meaningful for the VSTS community. There are plenty of places that we could all use help so I think that would be something meaningful and useful. I'm planning on doing this time locally in Redmond so that if I need background information on a project, I can get it quickly. I need to meet with some people about Infragistics stuff and really take some vacation time in that area (since it is so beautiful) so I think it's beneficial to be local during that week.

What should I work on?

Chuck mentioned a few ideas that we have so far but the one I personally love is being able to release the gigantic amount of work that Microsoft has done with their internal process templates & reports. Have you seen them? They are awesome! Reports are so tricky to do and take a good chunk of time to be done correctly. The Microsoft internal reports need to be scrubbed for external consumption which is my initial idea for volunteer work.

Or should I work on a productivity tool?

Don't let me taint your opinions though. What do you want/need that would be valuable for VSTS? Go to Chuck's blog post and give us suggestions about what you would like to see me work on. No car washing or details though :) unless it's for a good charity organization then I'll consider it.

Update on July NetAdvantage for .NET Hotfix

Testing is going as planned. This hotfix release will include the English and Japanese editions. We expect to release the English hotfix to all no later than Tuesday July 15th and the Japanese hotfix by Friday July 18th.
