What do you mean I'm not Activated!?

After some deliberating, I finally convinced myself that I needed to upgrade my home computer from WinXP to Vista.  I went for the clean install instead of the upgrade, so that I could keep my XP environment in palce, should I need to fall back - plus, I love the opportunity for a clean start..

The install went rather smoothly.  The only gotcha was the need to provide my SATA RAID controller driver.  I was extremely delighted to see that Vista supported removable drives (thumb drives), since I tore my floppy drive out a year ago.

After finally getting my wireless USB adaptor to work, I was able to successfully activate my copy of Vista.  That was all about 2 weeks ago.  Yesterday, I decided to install some updates, and noticed that my SATA RAID driver was available as an optionsl driver.  I happilly installed it, and rebooted..  To my dismay, upon rebooting, Vista deemed that my hardware had so drastically changed that my activation was no longer valid.  And of course, I couldn't activate online since "This key has already been activated".  I got it re-activated after speaking to Microsoft Support, but I couldn't get them to understand that I believe the cause of the problem was the driver update.. and this may/should be considered a bug, or at least a warning for anyone downloading it.  So, consider this my public service announcement.

If you have already activated Windows Vista, and you see an optional driver update for your SATA RAID controller, proceed with caution.  You may spend the next hour on the phone (or chat), getting a new activation key.

Had same problem with my SCSI drives, don't get me wrong I am a huge MS fan and love Vista but I think this one might have been release a little earlier than it should have. The biggest irk I have with vista is the problems with VS 2005 they "work" but not as well as they should for example you cannot set a break point in asp.net anymore and actually step in.

Good advice and thanks for the heads up. It's real catch 22 situation though. You want to be cautious because of the activation problem, but Vista has some REAL problems with some SATA controllers. For example, many of the Nvidia chipsets cause all kinds of problems with sound cards etc until you install the latest drivers. Many Creative Labs users have reported poping and crackeling until they install they install new drivers for the motherboard...

So my advice is be cautious, but if you have ANY hardward problems, you might want to install the drivers when a phone is nearby to contact MS in case of Activation issues.

Chris,

I might not understand your post, but what you describe works just fine on my Vista setups. Integrated Pipeline debugging does not work 100%, so perhaps that is your problem? It is a new feature in IIS7. the "Orcas" of Visual Studio release will debugging in it. In the mean time you can use the advice here to work around it:

Hope it helps.

Geoff,

Yeah the slimy hack "sorta" of works but is not 100% it really isn't a big deal as 99% of the time I can just look at the line number slap myself in the head and hit refresh... It just erks me to no end lol and yeah orca works pretty nice with vista expecially when it comes to the NET 3 stuff...

Thanks for the link though there was something in the article that i actually didnt do "hoping" it helps...
